Fertilizer Queue Position¶
The Hormuz closure disrupted approximately one-third of global fertilizer suppliers — specifically ammonium nitrate and urea — through a mechanism that is now becoming clear: fertilizer is at the back of the transit priority queue and its recovery will outlast the initial energy cargo normalization.
The Mechanism¶
The phased restart protocol prioritizes vessel types in this order:
1. Oil tankers (energy security imperative)
2. LNG carriers (highest value, most urgent energy need)
3. Other cargo types
Fertilizer shipments — critical agricultural inputs — fall into the lower-priority category. Kpler's Alexis Ellender (via Guardian, June 15) specifically noted that fertilizer is "not as high a priority" for Hormuz transit compared to oil tankers and LNG carriers.
The Scale of Disruption¶
The Economist Intelligence Unit's Kona Haque (via Deutsche Bank Commodities 2026: The Hormuz Factor report):
"The Hormuz disruption impacts approximately one-third of global fertilizer suppliers — ammonium nitrate and urea critical for agricultural production."
This creates a cascading second-order food security effect:
1. Fertilizer shipments delayed or rerouted → fertilizer prices rise
2. Higher fertilizer costs → higher food production costs for farmers
3. Food production costs rise → higher consumer food prices globally
4. Import-dependent regions most exposed (Middle East, South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa)
Relationship to Nitrogen Fertilizer Price Collapse¶
The nitrogen-fertilizer-price-collapse concept (India urea tender $530/t June 2026 vs $947/t April 2026, ~44% drop) represents the early phase of this recovery — prices are falling from peak but remain elevated and supply chains remain disrupted. The queue position explains why the recovery is asymmetric: prices collapse rapidly on deal announcement (relief rally), but physical supply chains take far longer to normalize.

- Fertilizer transit normalization: Month 4+ — fertilizer waits behind energy cargoes

Why This Is a Distinct Concept¶
Unlike crude oil and refined products disruption (which are primarily energy/transportation focused), fertilizer disruption is a food system vulnerability — it connects the energy crisis to agricultural markets and consumer food prices through a distinct causal pathway.
