Jet Fuel¶
Definition¶
Jet fuel (kerosene-based aviation turbine fuel) is a middle distillate refined from crude oil. It is one of the most supply-sensitive refined products in the Hormuz crisis because Middle Eastern refineries — particularly Kuwait's Al Zour (615,000 bpd) — are major suppliers to Europe and Africa.
Current Crisis State (May–June 2026)¶
Price Shock¶
- Jet fuel prices nearly tripled after Middle Eastern exports were cut off (IEA May 2026)
- Jet cracks widened to $80–100/bbl over crude — extraordinary by historical standards (JPMorgan, May 13, 2026)
- In the Extended Disruption scenario, jet fuel could reach $300/bbl at major refining centers (Wood Mackenzie)
Inventory Depletion¶
- ARA (Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp) jet fuel inventories down a third since war started — 6-year low (Bloomberg Intelligence, May 2026)
- European jet fuel inventories could hit critical levels as soon as June if Hormuz stays shut (Morgan Stanley, Bloomberg Intelligence)
- Kyle Bass (June 5, 2026) warned that Spain, France, Italy have notified private aviation operators that jet fuel may be unavailable at any price this summer
Aviation Impact¶
- 30–50% of commercial flights face disruption or cancellation (Kyle Bass, June 5, 2026)
- Aviation activity running well below normal levels — helping ease some pressure on jet fuel prices (IEA May 2026)
- Private aviation already warned; commercial aviation not immune
- SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) mandate gap emerges as structural vulnerability (Rystad Energy, May 2026)
Regional Exposure¶
- Europe is a key buyer: imports roughly one-third of all diesel and jet fuel exports via Hormuz (JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley)
- Europe has roughly one more month beyond Asia before jet fuel situation becomes critical (JPMorgan, March 2026)
- Less wealthy Asian countries hit hardest: refined product imports down 35% (JPMorgan, March 2026)
Why Jet Fuel Is Uniquely Vulnerable¶
- No substitute in aviation — unlike power generation (coal switching) or heating (LPG), jet fuel has no practical near-term substitute for commercial aviation
- Middle Eastern refining dependency — Kuwait's Al Zour refinery (615,000 bpd) was a primary supplier to Europe; now offline
- Seasonal demand peak — summer travel season compounds the shortage
- Inventory sensitivity — jet fuel inventories are smaller and turn faster than crude stocks; critical thresholds hit sooner
Key Data Points¶
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Price increase since war | ~3× | IEA May 2026 |
| Jet crack spread | $80–100/bbl over crude | JPMorgan, May 2026 |
| ARA inventories | Down 33% (6-year low) | Bloomberg Intelligence |
| Europe critical level | June 2026 | Morgan Stanley, Bloomberg Intelligence |
| Commercial flight disruption | 30–50% | Kyle Bass, June 2026 |
| Extended disruption scenario price | $300/bbl | Wood Mackenzie |
