Key Numbers

Prior Forecast June 2026
2026 demand growth 1.17 mbd 970,000 bpd
2027 demand growth 1.54 mbd 1.73 mbd

Second consecutive downward revision for 2026.

Supply Situation

  • OPEC+ crude output averaged 33.13 mbd in May, down 190,000 bpd from April
  • Iran posted the biggest production drop — exports sharply lower due to US blockade
  • OPEC+ had agreed to resume output increases from April, but the Hormuz closure made that impossible

OPEC vs IEA/EIA on Demand Impact

OPEC continues to see a smaller demand impact from the Hormuz war than either the EIA or IEA. Both those agencies expect oil demand to decline in 2026; OPEC sees only slower growth.

The 2027 upgrade (+190kbd vs prior) reflects OPEC's view that the disruption is temporary and the rebound will be meaningful.

Significance for the KB

Having both IEA and OPEC in the KB provides useful dual-institutional corroboration with meaningful divergence on magnitude:
- IEA: -1.1 mbd demand (decline, not just slower growth)
- OPEC: +0.97 mbd demand (positive growth, just weaker than expected)

This divergence itself is analytically significant — it reflects different assumptions about demand elasticity, substitution, and how quickly consumers adapt to price spikes.

Concepts

  • structural-surplus-2027 — OPEC corroborates the structural surplus direction for 2027 (+1.73 mbd demand growth); magnitude differs from IEA but direction consistent
