Fujairah¶
Location: Gulf of Oman coast, United Arab Emirates
Classification: Critical export infrastructure — UAE's East-West bypass terminal and Gulf of Oman STS hub
Role in the Crisis¶
Fujairah serves two critical functions in the current crisis:
1. Pipeline Workaround Terminal¶
Habshan-Fujairah pipeline delivers crude from Abu Dhabi's Habshan field to Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman, bypassing Hormuz:

2. STS Transfer Hub¶
Fujairah and the surrounding Gulf of Oman waters have become the primary STS (ship-to-ship) transfer zone:
- Loaded VLCCs from UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait exit the Gulf → perform STS off Fujairah/Oman coast → tankers return empty through Hormuz
- 16 tankers clustered off Oman for STS transfers over the weekend of June 6–8 (Bloomberg/gCaptain)
- Area was "entirely empty" a month prior
Why Fujairah Matters¶
- Gulf of Oman exit point: Unlike Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman exit route via STS allows loaded tankers to avoid Iranian targeting in the Strait
- ADNOC operations: ADNOC has continued shipping crude with transponders off (dark fleet), maintaining "a healthy rate" across the strait
- STS enabler: Fujairah's offshore STS infrastructure allows the tanker loop to function
