Gulf of Oman

Location: Between the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Sea; borders Oman, UAE, Iran, Pakistan
Classification: Maritime corridor — primary STS transfer zone and dark fleet workaround route

Role in the Crisis

The Gulf of Oman is the critical workaround corridor enabling Gulf oil to reach global markets despite Hormuz closure:

STS Transfer Operations

  • Primary STS zone: Oil from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait is transferred from VLCCs to other vessels in Gulf of Oman waters (outside the Strait of Hormuz)
  • 16 tankers clustered off Oman over the weekend of June 6–8 — area was "entirely empty" a month ago
  • 12 ships doing STS on June 6 alone (TankerTrackers)
  • This is "oil coming from Iran's Arab neighbors" — not Iranian oil

Dark Fleet Corridor

  • Tankers use the Omani coastal route — outside Iranian territorial waters
  • Under US Navy coordination (Project Freedom)
  • Operational procedures: nighttime, lights off, AIS off, radio silence, minimized radar
  • ~15 vessels/day using the corridor (INTERTANKO advisory)

Relationship to Strait of Hormuz

  • Without Gulf of Oman workaround: ~20 mbd normal flow through Hormuz would cease entirely
  • With workaround: ~2 mbd flows via dark fleet/STS (Rapidan Energy Group) — meaningful but insufficient
  • Why it's safer: The route stays in Omani waters and under US military coverage; direct Hormuz transit risks Iranian targeting

Why the Gulf of Oman Matters

  • The workaround chain: Gulf producers → VLCC → STS transfer in Gulf of Oman → tanker returns empty via Hormuz → reloads
  • Without the Gulf of Oman STS zone, the entire tanker loop collapses
  • The workaround is "the primary reason oil isn't $200/bbl right now"
