Role in the Crisis

Yanbu is the terminus of Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline (Petroline), which runs ~1,200 km from the Eastern Province Ghawar oilfields to Yanbu on the Red Sea. With Hormuz closed, this pipeline is now a critical workaround route:

Why Yanbu Matters

  • Constraint: Pipeline capacity (~7 mbd) covers only ~35% of normal 20 mbd Hormuz flow
  • Partial relief: Yanbu is enabling Saudi Arabia to export at reduced but meaningful rates

Strategic Significance

Yanbu's pipeline connection was designed precisely for scenarios where Hormuz is disrupted. However, even at full capacity, it cannot compensate for full Hormuz closure. The ~7 mbd pipeline workaround is "significant but insufficient" compared to the ~20 mbd that normally transits Hormuz.
