What Is the Hormuz Tanker Loop

The "Hormuz Tanker Loop" describes the circular routing pattern tankers are using to maintain oil flows from Persian Gulf producers to market:

  1. Loaded VLCCs exit the Persian Gulf — bypassing the Strait via the STS workaround
  2. STS transfer in Gulf of Oman — oil offloaded for final transport
  3. Empty tanker returns empty through Strait of Hormuz — to pick up new cargo (under Project Freedom escort)
  4. Reload from regional producers — UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq
  5. Repeat
