Status: Active workaround employed by VLCCs to bypass Iranian targeting in the Strait of Hormuz.

What Is STS Transfer

Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfer is a logistics operation where cargo is transferred from one vessel to another while both are at anchor or moored, typically using flexible hoses and a gantry arm. In the current crisis context:

  1. Loaded VLCCs exit the Persian Gulf — heading toward the Gulf of Oman
  2. STS transfer in Gulf of Oman — oil offloaded to another vessel (or vice versa)
  3. Avoids Strait of Hormuz transit — loaded tankers don't pass through the contested waterway
  4. Empty tankers return through the Strait — to pick up new cargo from UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq
